Welcome to the Site for Language Management in Canada (SLMC). We encourage you to explore each section of the site and find out everything there is to know about language management in Canada.

What is language management?
Language management is the overall organization of activities pertaining to a language in a specific area (country, state, province, etc.). It promotes tools to meet the various language needs of a population and contributes to language development.

Language management is generally broken down into two areas of activity:

Management of language status, which involves language legislation and policy: official languages issues, the relationship of the official languages to other, unofficial languages, etc.

Management of the linguistic code, which involves developing and organizing the internal resources of a language: the creation of new words, officialization, standardization, establishing a standard spelling or grammar, etc.

The SLMC contains information on language legislation and policy in Canada, a country with two official languages and two legal systems. You can also learn about the linguistic and legal aspects of languages in Canada, from the beginnings of colonization to the present day. Demolinguistic tables and geolinguistic maps show the distribution of many languages in Canada. In addition, you can find out what the various stakeholders on the national scene have achieved in language management.
